It was only just a dream... come true? (Joshua)

P.S. ~~~~~ah= your name ^_^

Your face was streaked with tears. As was Joshua’s. You were in Melbourne for your holidays by yourself, when you met the Singapore actor, Joshua Tan.

“I don’t want to go... I’ll miss you...” you sobbed hard, burying your face in his chest.

“I know. I’ll miss you too...” He whispered back, choking on the tears.

“Oh Joshua...” You cried even harder. In fact, you had already cried so much that your eyes were dry.

The past few days were magical. You two had gone to the park, baked bread, gone swimming... It killed you to have to leave the Heaven Joshua had created with you...

“Oh my God. I am so sorry...” A young man said, hurriedly grabbing the Starbucks cup.

He quickly grabbed a bunch of napkins whilst you struggled out of your spring jacket. Despite it being summer, you decided to play a little fashionista and wear your spring jacket. You were walking into Starbucks when you bumped into an Asian man. The drink in his hand had spilled and splashed onto your jacket.

“Here...” He said, taking your jacket and dabbing at it with napkins. Your creme pants were fine. So was your army-print camo tank top. It was just the jacket thankfully.

“It’s ok... I don’t actually need it...” You laugh nervously.

He looked up at you. His eyes were a deep brown, hair short and a mole above his right eyebrow. A flash of recognition hit you but you couldn’t quite place who.....

“I’m seriously sorry.” he repeated again.

“Sir, it’s alright. Hey. You aren’t local are you?” you asked.

He shook his head. “Nope! I’m from Singapore!”

“Singapore? I’m from Singapore too! Oh wow. Coincidence!”

You both laughed.

“I’m really sorry about your jacket. Why don’t I wash it for you? I can return it tomorrow.”

You considered this option.

“Alright. What’s your number and address? I can collect it.”

He wrote his number on a slip of paper along with his address. You in return gave him your hotel room number. After which, you agreed to meet at Starbucks the next morning.

The next morning, sure enough, you found him sitting at one of the tables outside, your jacket in a paper bag.

“Hey!” he said, getting up.

You smiled and sat in the seat he’d pulled out for you.

“I’m still sorry about your jacket,” he said, sitting down.

“It’s fine. Seriously! No permanent harm or damage whatsoever! Except I’ll be smelling of lovely coffee~”

Both of you started chatting. You talked about everything under the sun. After one and a half hours, both of you got a bit restless but neither wanted to say goodbye.

“How about a walk along the river?” Joshua asked.

“Sure!”

Both of you strolled along the river, laughing as you went. The scent of flowers surrounded you two and the grass tickled your feet. Both of you spent the entire day together, just getting to know each other. After the sun had set, Joshua walked you to your hotel and said goodnight.

You spent days together. And one week after the events, Joshua asked you to be his girl. You chewed your lip, contemplating for like, 2 seconds? Before you laughed a yes out. Joshua hugged you and spun you around in the air.

For the entire holiday, you spent your time with Joshua. You met his friends and even went for a bonfire at the beach with Joshua and his mates.

You remembered how the air was dense with bonfire smoke and you and Joshua had escaped to the edge of the water where you splashed each other with salt water. Joshua showed you how to play with skipping stones, the exact angle to throw them so that they would skip across the water.

Another night, you Skyped your family back home. Your big brother immediately got protective, asking Joshua questions. Joshua was nervous at first but gradually warmed up and was very polite and friendly towards them. But after you cut the call, Joshua heaved a sigh of relief.

“Phew! Your brother really loves you huh?”

You laughed and nodded, ruffling his short hair.

“But not as much as I love you,” You whispered, kissing him.

You both tried to ignore the fact that it was nearing the time for you to return home. But the nearer it got, the harder it became to ignore.

On the last night you spent together, Joshua tried his best to make it memorable. You baked bread together, went for a picnic in a park, went fishing and had a movie marathon at night, lasting until 3 in the morning.

You slept together, Joshua’s arms tight around your waist as if never wanting to let go. In the morning when you woke, the sun was shining through the window and made Joshua’s sleeping figure seem to glow. You were still pressed against his chest and you could softly hear his heartbeat.

“Psst... Joshua... Baby... Wake up...” You whisper, wriggling a little higher and kissing his cheek.

Joshua’s eyes cracked open and he smiled. After both of you had washed up and changed out of your pajamas, Joshua took you to the Starbucks you met at.

“This is where we met. I promise to come here everyday.” Joshua whispered into your ear.

You hugged him and both of you got a seat. Joshua helped you to order your food. In the meantime, you took out a book and started reading. All of a sudden, you saw a bright flash of light from the corner of your eye.

“Wtf?!” You exclaimed, jumping up.

You looked to see Joshua grinning at you.

“JOSHUA!” You laughed, swatting at him.

“What? Well it was a pretty scene... You looked very serene and peaceful while reading. Definite new wallpaper” He chuckled, sitting down.

As the day progressed, a lump formed in your throat. Time just flew by and soon you were both silent and standing at the departure gates.

“I know... I’ll miss you too...~~~~~ah...”

You both clutched each other tightly.

“I promise to call you every single day. No matter what’s the cost. I can Skype you, call you, email you, text you, whatsapp you...”

“Miss..?” The guard called me.

“You have to go,” Joshua choked.

“I don’t want to...”

“Miss.”

“Good bye...”

“Miss?”

“Miss?!”

“Excuse me Miss!”

“WHAT?!” You screamed, sitting right up.

The other passengers were staring at you. You blushed.

“We’re reaching Melbourne soon. Please return your seat to the upright position.” The air stewardess said.

You nodded your head. So it had all been a dream. A heartbreaking dream. In the few hours you had the weirdest dream in your life. You groaned, slapping your self. Your fingers brushed against a wet cheek. So you really had been crying. You sighed.

After the plane had touched down and you collected your baggage, you stepped out. The crisp Melbourne air hit you. The air was pure and beautiful. It was so fresh. You called a cab and went to your hotel. After checking in, you decided to go for a walk.

You went to the lobby and spoke to the lady at the help desk.

“Excuse me miss. Could you tell me the nearest place I could get a good cup of coffee?”

“Sure. Just take a walk down the road and turn right. Walk about 2 blocks and you’ll find Starbucks. Best cuppa I’ve ever drank!” She replied in her thick Australian Accent. <A/N: Aussie ‘slang’ for cup of coffee (I think. Maybe it’s tea *shrugs*) is a Cuppa>

“Kay! Thanks!”

You followed her instructions and got to the Starbucks. You pushed open the door and almost immediately collided with a man about to walk out. His coffee spilt on your jacket.

““Oh my God.

“Joshua..?” You whisper. “Joshua... Tan..?”

Basketball Is Just My Thang! (Tosh)

P.S. <A/N ~~~~~ah= your name ^_^>

You are in the same Secondary school as Tosh. Let’s just say girls aren’t allowed to join basketball. But you managed to convince the teacher in charge to let you join and try out. You’re the only girl. You always loved basketball and as long as you could play it, you didn’t really give a damn that you wouldn’t be able to take part in any competition.

You changed out of your uniform and into your PE attire. It was your first basketball practice with the team. You wanted to get there early to do a little warm up before practise started.

Leaving your school bag in class, you jogged to the basketball court carrying your own basketball brought from home. You sprinted a few laps and stretched, your usual exercise, before beginning to do ball exercises. You dribbled the ball around the court, did different throws with the ball. A few of the basketball guys were starting to fall in slowly. You ignored them as you practiced throwing the ball into the hoop.

Some of the guys ignored you, getting on with their own warm ups. But most of them watched as you threw. Out of the corner of your eye, you quickly checked out the guys.

‘Ew... Gross... Hm... He’s ok but not my type... WOAH. DAMMIT. HE'S F*CKING HOT!!!" You thought to yourself.

One of the boys who was watching you had caught your eye. He looked so cute as he drank from a bottle of water, especially his mole. You tried to ignore him and continue practicing. You were glad that you had caught the attention of at least a guy who was hot crush material.

“OK! Five more minutes before we start!” The coach shouted, blowing his whistle.

You saw the ‘hot guy’ turn away from you and walk off after the coach made the announcement.

‘Dammit!’ You thought. ‘Just when I thought I had his attention!’

Suddenly you felt yourself trip over something.

“F*CK!” You shrieked.

You felt yourself falling before hitting the hot ground.

“I am so sorry!” a voice said.

“It’s ugh. Screw you. It’s ok.” You muttered, standing up and straightening yourself.
Looking up at your tripper, you realised with extreme shock, that it was the ‘hot guy’. You gulped.

“I am truly sorry. Hey. Are you the new girl on the team?” He asked.

Your mouth seemed to have gone dry. Opening your mouth, you muttered, “It’s ok. Yea. I’m ~~~~~ah! You?”

“Hey! I’m Tosh,” he replied.

The coach blew the whistle. All of you quickly fell in and did warm ups. After hours of practice and dribbling and running and sprinting, the coach gathered all of you to give a debrief.

“Well, I am quite pleased with today’s performance. And some of you boys, have a LOT to learn from ~~~~~ah. Yes, she’s a girl and she is new. But she plays better than some of you guniangs! That is all. Thank you boys and girl!”

The bunch of you dispersed. You went to get your water bottle and took a long swig of your drink. Tosh came up to you.

“Hey! Nice moves out there! You're really good!”

“Thanks! You too.”

“Sorry about just now...”

“Ha. It's okay. No biggy. I don't even a scratch!”
Tosh’s friends wolf whistled at the two of you. “WA LIAO. TOSH. HITTING ON THE NEW GIRL ALREADY IS IT?”

“GO DIE LAH! F*CK YOU! LOL!” Tosh yelled back.

You blushed slightly but glared at them. Both of you walked to your class.

“Hang on. I want to change my shirt. I can’t stand reeking of sweat!” You said, before walking to the toilets.

Tosh just stripped and pulled over a new shirt. You changed out and sprayed yourself with deodorant.

By the time both of you finished changing and were ready to leave, you had already gotten to know a bit about each other.

“Taking the bus?” You asked.

Tosh nodded. You walked together and talked about everything under the sun.

“When I saw you at the court, my first thought was: WHAT DA F*CK? A girl playing basketball?”

“Well what can I say?” You cheekily replied. “Basketball is just my thang!”

The Perfect Fall (Joshua)

"Vassup!" I heard my bestie Joshua call behind me.

I turned and grinned. His short hair was blowing in the Aussie fall wind and he was grinning from ear to ear.

"Ello!" I returned.

Joshua and I have been friends for ages. We know all about each other. He knew all my deepest fears, all my secrets just as well as I knew his. We were inseperable. When he came up to me, he greeted me with our usual complicated secret friendship handshake.

Joshua tousled my hair, knowing I hated it. I squinted at him and laughed. When he wasn't looking, I got my revenge by jumping on his back.

"YEE HAR!" I screamed.

"You don't know what you just got yourself into." He said before darting off.

He piggybacked me all the way to the park before dropping me in front of the tyre swing.

"Fancy a swing love?" he asked sweetly.

I nodded and sat down. Joshua started pushing me. Back and forth. Back and forth. I laughed, my hair flying in the cool breeze.

Joshua watched me as I swung higher and higher.

"What do you see up there?" he called.

"I see London! I see Paris! I see Ireland!" I replied, shrieking with laughter.

Both of us laughed. I was laughing so hard, I didn't notice I wasn't holding on properly. Before long, I couldn't feel the seat anymore.

"AHHHH!!!" my scream echoed through the empty park, as I felt myself falling... falling... falling...

"GOTCHA'!" Joshua shouted, as I landed in his arms.

Sadly he didn't have a good grip. He caught me for a second before dropping me on the ground.

"Seriously?" I asked sarcastically. "Thanks anyway Josh..."

Feeling playful, Joshua knelt beside me and started tickling me. I squealed and rolled away.

"Stop! STOP! STAHP!!!" I laughed.

"What must you say?" he asked, laughing while continuing to tickle me to his hearts content.

"PLEASE!!!"
"Nope."

"PLEASE JOSHUA!! STOP T-T-T-TICKLING ME!" My stomach was beginning to hurt real bad.

"Wrong."

"Then? Oh great, marvelous, strong, handsome Joshua! I beg you! Stop tickling me!"

"Hmmm... Almost. But nope."

"TELL ME!!!" I squealed.

He stopped, sat bolt upright and looked at me. He seemed deep in thought for a second. Then he shook his head and helped me up.

"What just happened?" I asked.

"Dunno..."

We looked at each other and laughed. Cause we were Just. That. Crazy.

We walked along the path of the park till we reached the lake. The "park" was more like a small forest than a park. It was mainly trees and had no main path. Therefore no one really came here.

Joshua climbed up our tree and helped me up. We called the tree ours cuz it was our favorite tree. It was our little hideout. The furthest branch hung out over the lake and it was sturdy enough for both of us to sit on it and dip our toes in the water. We had carved at the side of the tree: Joshua and ~~~~~ah property!

"Careful..." Joshua said, pulling me up.

He edged over to the branch and helped me over. We sat and looked over the silver water.

"Are you free tonight?" Joshua asked.

"Sure why?"

"Come over to my place for dinner?"

"Definitely!"

We sat there the rest of the afternoon, chatting, playing, singing and basically larking about.

Just before sunset, Joshua walked me home. When we reached my gate, we hugged each other and I went into the house.

I climbed up to my room and rummaged through my closet. I pulled out my favorite light navy blue denim jeans, my white Gap singlet with dark pink, or rather rouge, stripes and lastly my dark brown leather jacket.

I went into my bathroom and took a bath, rinsing off all the dirt from the park. Then I got dressed, applied some light blusher and went to pull on my boots.

"Mom! I'm going to Joshua’s house for dinner!"

"You know the curfew! Be back by 10pm latest!"

I dragged on my black boots. It was a rather chilly fall night. Rather unusual. I got my bike out from the garage. I was too lazy to walk anyway.

I pedaled to Joshua’s house and dismounted my bike at the gate. I unlatched the gate. The moment I wheeled my bike through the gate, a strong scent of fresh roses hit me. Next thing I knew, I was surrounded by lights.

The lights were on the ground. It was a rainbow of colours. Red roses were surrounding the lights. It was such a beautiful sight. I gasped when I saw the words spelt by the lights and roses.

WILL YOU BE MINE? I LOVE YOU

The door flung open and there stood Joshua grinning.

"So..?" he asked awkwardly.

"DEFINITELY!" I laughed, running up to him and hugging him.

He wrapped his arms around my waist before lifting me up above the ground and spinning me around. Everything was well, everything was great. Everything was perfect.

Chapter 1

Jessie

My back was aching from the thin hard mattress. I had tossed and turned throughout the night, trying to escape the nightmares of my parent's death. One year had already passed but I still remembered it like it had just happened yesterday.  However, these nightmares had been consuming my dreams more frequently these days. I shivered as I thought about it again. I hoped nothing bad was going to happen.

Hi. I’m Jessie. I live with my brother, Bruce, and my best friend, Giselle, on the second floor of an abandoned shop house. Life wasn’t a bunch of roses. We got by sure, but it was difficult. However, I had nothing to complain about. This was much better than the first few months after our parents died. We had absolutely nothing but each other then. I didn’t even want to think about what we went through. I hoped we would never have to go through that hell again. But chances seemed slim, especially now since North Korea has decided to initiate World War III. The North Korean commies decided to launch their missiles a week back. It was supposed to fly over Japan but... the missile changed course, hitting South Korea and a little further down into China.

And BAM came the war.
Singapore is currently being fought over by the commies and the non-commies. The war doesn’t affect me that badly. It affects Giselle more. The missile hit pohang where her lover was staying. She hasn’t been able to contact him since. When the news reached here, she locked herself in her room and refused to come out. She only came out after two days looking like a mess. Her face was puffy from crying and her normally neat and beautiful hair looked like knotted rats tails. She hides her emotions really well these days, it’s as though she is made out of stone. It’s sad really, that love would make a girl as strong and tough as Giselle crumble.

1st March 2013 was when the news hit. It’s the 4th today. Bruce is still in bed. Giselle is in her room plucking guitar strings. It’s the only thing she does apart from eating and sleeping since the news hit. I think it’s the only thing that keeps her sane. It worries me when she does this. I guess she still can’t forget her lover.

Urgent notice was given out calling all the men to join the army just yesterday. Even my darling brother Bruce was not spared. Don’t they know that Bruce has hemihypertrophy? In case you didn’t know, it means that one leg is shorter than the other. He isn’t fit to join the army at all dammit! Bruce can’t go and fight! He has a really slim chance of surviving because of his leg.. If only girls could join the army, then I could fight in his place. I can’t help but feel angry at the world. I already lost my parents, Bruce is my only kin left. I’m so not going to lose him because of some sexist rule! F*ck...

I bit my tongue back as I thought of another problem at hand. Our food supply was running low. There was only a loaf of stale bread and about 100g of rice left. I wonder how we would be able to survive after this ran out. For the three of us, this would at most let us survive for another 1 month. But what about after that? We still have the tapioca in the backyard but they wouldn't be ripe till after 2 months. There is also Bruce's chicken but he will totally kill me if I slaughter it for food. So, our options are pretty limited right now.

I sighed and hacked off a small chunk of bread. Placing it on our makeshift table, a few planks joined together, I called Giselle to come and eat.

"Hey." She greeted me before breaking off a piece of the bread and sitting on the window where I was.

"How are you? Feeling better?" I asked, concerned. I was still hoping that she would get over her loss and be her happy bubbly self once again. It was selfish of me I know, but I did not want to lose my best friend as well.

She shrugged, glaring into the distance. Popping the bread in her mouth, she jumped off the ledge and went back into her room. I guess I wasn’t going to get my best friend back anytime soon. However, contrary to what I’d thought, she returned shortly with her guitar. It was the first time she played it out here instead of in her room.

The guitar... It was one of her last instruments. Before I’d met Giselle, she lived in Singapore itself. She attended music school, learning instruments of all kinds: Piano, Drums, Harp, Violin, Flute, Clarinet, Guitar... The list will never stop!

Her parents owned a music company. It was doing spectacularly until something went wrong and the entire company crashed. Her dad had a heart attack and her mother fled to America. Giselle grabbed a suitcase, tossed in some clothes, her drumsticks, ukulele, guitalele, flute and tuner. With her best and favorite guitar on her back, she fled to Pulau Ubin where we met on the boat.

And why was I on the boat? I was happy. Initially. Go home from school to my family... Everything was simple, perfect. Until my parents got into a car accident. I tried to pay the rent but couldn’t. Bruce and I got kicked out. With the little money we had, we packed food and clothes, fleeing to Pulau Ubin.

On the boat was only Giselle, myself and Bruce. Giselle helped Bruce as she felt sorry for him. That was how we met.

Back to the present... Giselle strummed the guitar. I sat looking out, listening to the guitar. The wind blew through over the tops of the trees. The leaves rustled and the leaves that were dry blew off into the wind. The green and brown leaves fluttered and danced like butterflies.

With the serenity going on, it’s hard to believe that World War 3 was approaching Singapore.

“Morning Sis, Giselle...” Bruce yawned from behind. He was leaning heavily on his crutch. Taking his share of bread, he sat down on his chair. He took out his precious blank notebook, full of drawings and sketches. Taking his stubble of a pencil, with smooth, quick motions, a flick of his wrist and a light shading with his thumb, a beautiful flower appeared on the originally blank piece of paper.

Smiling, I took out one of the cloths from the special box I use to contain my sewing things. This was how we got by. Bruce drew, I sewed the designs and Giselle would march down to the pier with maybe her guitar or some instrument. She would sit there all day playing and sell whatever it was we made. Handkerchiefs, shirts, bandanas...

“Sis? Must I go to the army?” Bruce suddenly asked.

I was caught by surprise.

“What? Well...” I trailed.

“Of course not. Not with your disability. Besides. I’m sure in the newspapers which called for men only stated able-bodied men have to go.” Giselle cut me off.

I caught her eye and mouthed ‘Thank You’. Bruce still looked nervous.

Giselle put a bold smile on and nodded. Bruce looked relieved.

“Oh thank God... I’m sure I’d be killed or mocked at. Even if I’m put in kitchen duty, that would be stupid. I’m not up to cooking food for big groups of people...” Bruce nattered on.

I looked at Giselle who had a daring, decided glint in her eyes. Bruce was still ranting when suddenly Giselle cut him off.

“Which is why...” she trailed.

“Oh no...” I mumbled.

Please don’t say it.....................

“I’m joining the army.”
